Research Interests: Dr. Manzi's research focus is on the clinical and epidemiological study of systemic lupus
erythematosus (SLE). A major emphasis of Dr. Manzi's research is pathogenesis and associated
risk factors of premature cardiovascular disease in young women with SLE. Much of the work in
this area has been done in collaboration with the Department of Epidemiology at the Graduate
School of Public Health (GSPH). Ongoing studies are designed to determine the prevalence of
subclinical atherosclerosis using new vascular imaging techniques and the associated traditional cardiovascular
risk factors, SLE specific and inflammatory marker variables.
Dr. Manzi, with other collaborators at the GSPH, is examining the association between genetic
polymorphisms of the beta 2-glycoprotein 1 gene and the presence of anti-phospholipid
antibodies and thrombotic events in SLE.
Other current research endeavors include clinical trials examining the efficacy and safety of
new therapeutic agents in SLE, the prevalence of and risk factors associated with osteoporosis,
and the risk of malignancy in women with SLE, and the role of hormones in disease activity.
Dr. Manzi is actively participating in the Epidemiology of Women's Health curriculum at the
Graduate School of Public Health and is involved in training pre and doctoral candidates in epidemiology and medicine.
